Break-Up & Separation Counselling for Different Situations
Every relationship ending is different.
You may be:
-
considering whether to stay or leave
-
trying to make sense of a relationship that has ended
-
struggling with grief, anger, sadness, or uncertainty after a breakup
-
navigating an ongoing separation from your partner
-
finding communication difficult while you are separating
-
trying to establish healthier boundaries with an ex-partner
-
adjusting to life after a long-term relationship
-
working out how to move forward when children are involved
-
wondering whether the relationship can be repaired rather than ended
You don't need to have everything worked out before starting counselling. Sometimes the first step is simply having a place to slow things down and understand what is happening.
Individual or Couples Counselling?
Break-up and separation counselling can look different depending on where you are in the process.
Individual Counselling
You may choose individual counselling if you are processing a breakup or separation on your own, your partner does not want to attend counselling, or you need space to work through your own emotions, decisions, and relationship patterns.
Sessions can help you:
-
process grief and difficult emotions
-
gain clarity around your decisions
-
understand patterns that have developed within the relationship
-
rebuild confidence and emotional stability
-
establish boundaries
-
navigate communication with an ex-partner
-
adjust to life after the relationship ends
Couples Counselling
Sometimes a couple is not necessarily looking to repair the relationship. You may be trying to understand whether to stay together, communicate more effectively during a separation, or work through the impact of a relationship breakdown.
Couples counselling can provide a structured space to slow down conflict, understand the patterns between you, and have conversations that can be difficult to manage on your own.
Where appropriate, counselling can also support couples who are trying to separate respectfully and communicate more effectively as they move into a different kind of relationship.
When You're Not Sure Whether to Stay or Go
One of the most difficult parts of relationship breakdown can be uncertainty.
You may still care deeply about your partner while also feeling unhappy, disconnected, or exhausted by the relationship. You may be questioning whether things can change, whether you've tried everything, or whether ending the relationship is the right decision.
Counselling isn't about telling you whether you should stay or leave.
Instead, we can explore what is happening in the relationship, the patterns that keep repeating, what you need, and what options may be available to you.
The goal is to help you make decisions with greater clarity rather than from a place of overwhelm or pressure.
When a Relationship Has Already Ended
The end of a relationship can involve more than losing the relationship itself.
You may also be adjusting to changes in your identity, routines, family life, friendships, future plans, or sense of security.
Counselling can provide space to:
-
process the loss of the relationship
-
understand what happened
-
work through difficult emotions
-
recognise patterns you don't want to repeat
-
rebuild your sense of self
-
develop healthier boundaries
-
adjust to life after separation
-
consider what you want your future relationships to look like
Moving forward doesn't necessarily mean forgetting what happened. It can mean understanding it differently and deciding what you want to carry with you.

My Approach
My work is trauma-informed, attachment-focused, and emotionally focused, with counselling tailored to your individual circumstances.
Rather than simply focusing on what happened, we can explore the emotional and relational patterns underneath it.
Depending on your situation, we may:
-
identify recurring relationship patterns
-
explore attachment needs and emotional responses
-
understand triggers and protective behaviours
-
work with grief, anger, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm
-
develop healthier communication and boundaries
-
support emotional regulation during difficult interactions
-
explore values and decision-making
-
consider what needs to change for future relationships
The goal isn't to rush you towards a particular outcome. It's to help you understand what is happening and move forward in a way that feels considered, grounded, and aligned with your needs.
Separation When Children Are Involved
When children are involved, separation can become more complicated.
You may need to continue communicating with your former partner even when the relationship itself has ended. This can make boundaries, conflict, and emotional regulation particularly difficult.
Individual counselling can help you develop strategies for managing these interactions and creating a more stable approach to communication and co-parenting.
Where appropriate, couples counselling can also provide a structured space for parents to work through communication difficulties and establish healthier ways of relating after separation.
Online Break-Up & Separation Counselling
I provide secure online counselling sessions across Sydney and Australia.
Telehealth can provide a private and flexible way to access support while you are navigating an emotionally demanding period, without needing to travel to an appointment.
Sessions are confidential, and no referral is required.
Not sure what kind of support you need?
You don't need to know whether you need individual counselling, couples counselling, or another form of support before getting started.
A brief initial conversation can help us understand what you're experiencing and work out what type of counselling is likely to be most appropriate.
